Winter Camping

By

The invitation was too tempting to pass up—a backcountry trip in the Hahn Peak Wilderness near Steamboat, CO, all expenses paid. But there was a hitch. The trip was in February and rather than hiking, we would be backcountry skiing. I wasn’t too worried about the skiing part.

Chic-Choc Wow!

Let’s be honest. New England can have a reputation for icy skiing. Anyone who grew up skiing in the east knows that’s true. And so is another rule: the farther northeast you go, the better the powder gets. This is no secret to backcountry skiers, who’ve schussed the slides of the Adirondacks, glades of Vermont, and bare summit cones and open bowls of New Hampshire for years.

We’ve made the long trip around the sun once again. Before long, Old Man Winter will blanket Vermont in white, and many of us will be out there making the most of it on our skis, boards, snowshoes, bikes, and sleds. Ever year, we stumble on a few items that we feel could make your winter season even more enjoyable, and they are featured here. Have a great winter, and stay warm and dry!

Andean Adventure

I suppose it’s sacrilegious for an intrepid hiker to go to Peru for the first time and not trek the Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu, but it was a conscious decision which I don’t regret. Hike the famous Inca Trail to a famous world heritage site with hundreds of people?

The Challenges of Living in the Moment

Even though I’ve been an avid (some would say fanatic) skier for half a century, my favorite season is autumn. Part of my love for fall is the clear air, the crisp temperatures, and the brilliant foliage. I’m lucky to work outside quite a bit, and autumn is ideal, thanks to cooler days and the absence of insects.

Water’s allure is rooted deeply in the human psyche. Perhaps originally driven by the need for food, the magnetism of exploring new places by boat has gone well beyond the desire for a good fish dinner. There was something more that drove the Polynesians to find Hawaii, the Phoenicians to build great rowing ships, and the Europeans to sail to the four corners of the earth.
