Map and Compass I: Land Navigation Basics
Saturday, January 16th, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Saturday, February 20th, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
GMC Visitor Center, Waterbury Center

Develop your navigation skills in the woods with a map and compass. Build your confidence in using these essential outdoor tools as we practice “getting lost” and finding ourselves in indoor and outdoor exercises. Learn what to do when you run into a cliff or river, how to interpret terrain, and estimate distances. No experience necessary. Compasses provided. Snowshoes required. Be prepared to spend most of the day outdoors. Distance not to exceed 4 miles or 1,500 feet elevation gain. Hike rating: easy to moderate. Instructors: GMC Education Staff. Limit: 15. Fee: $55. Age Limit: 16 and up. Register at least two weeks in advance.

Leave No Trace Awareness Workshop

Is there really such a thing as biodegradable soap? Is it okay to toss your apple core in the woods? What are the rules for backcountry fires? These are some of the questions and practices of Leave No Trace, a nationwide program educating campers and outdoor travelers about minimum impact backcountry skills. Join us for a lively evening discussion of these essential skills and how to apply them in winter. Instructor: Pete Antos-Ketcham; GMC Education Staff. Limit: 20. Fee: $40. Register by February 5.
